A board game that puts you in the life of a laborer in a 3rd country during a pandemic

3rd World Labour is a strategy board game about surviving as a daily-wage worker during a pandemic.
Players take the role of labourers living in a country where public welfare is limited. Every round forces a difficult choice: go outside to work and earn money while risking illness, or stay home to protect your health and lose the income you need to survive.
Around that simple decision are expenses, debt, interest, skill development, construction work and chance — all competing for the same limited amount of money.
For many daily-wage workers, “stay home and stay safe” is not really a choice.
If you do not work, you may not have enough money for food, rent, debt or the next emergency. But if you go to work, you expose yourself to risks that people with more financial security can avoid.
During a crisis, the same event can therefore affect people very differently.
The problem is not simply that some people make bad decisions. Sometimes every available decision carries a cost, and the person with the least financial buffer has the fewest safe options.
3rd World Labour turns that situation into a game of uncomfortable trade-offs.
On each turn, players choose whether to Go to Work or Stay Safe at Home.
Going to work lets a player join a construction site, place building blocks and earn income. But working alongside other labourers increases the risk of receiving sickness cards and eventually suffering their effects.
Staying home removes sickness risk and gives time to improve skills, but the player still has expenses to pay and earns no normal wage from work.
Debt and interest add another layer of pressure. Players can borrow money, repay loans or even buy lottery tickets, while completed buildings trigger interest payments for everyone.
The game ends when the fourth building is completed. The player with the most money wins — deliberately reinforcing the game's central point: when public protection is weak, having money often means having access to safer and better choices.
3rd World Labour was designed by Poom Phumiphan and published by Wizards of Learning in 2022.
The project began with a question about the vulnerability of daily-wage labourers. The design team researched the subject separately, and the game's development included conversations with real daily workers to better understand the conditions, pressures and obstacles they face when social welfare is insufficient.
One of the inspirations was 3rd World Farmer, an online game that uses difficult systemic choices to communicate the experience of poverty in developing countries.
3rd World Labour applies a similar idea to daily-wage work during a pandemic. Instead of explaining inequality through text, the game places players inside a system where money, health, debt and survival constantly compete with one another.
Its mechanics include action drafting, dice rolling, loans, pattern building and push-your-luck, turning social and economic pressure into decisions the player has to personally make.
3rd World Labour: Pandemic Edition was released in 2022 as a physical board game for 2–5 players, with a play time of approximately 15–45 minutes.
The project overview is publicly available on LifeBugs, and the game is also listed on BoardGameGeek.
